Fix a failed sewer line through two small pits instead of a trench through your yard — the method of choice for Bozeman's deep lines, mature trees, and finished landscapes.
Montana's frost line forces sewer lines deep underground. With traditional excavation, every extra foot of depth means a wider, costlier, more destructive trench. Trenchless methods sidestep the problem almost entirely: the work happens inside the existing pipe, reached through one or two compact access pits. The yard your cottonwoods took forty years to shade stays intact, the driveway stays poured, and in most cases the job wraps in a day or two.
Two technologies do the heavy lifting, and which one fits depends on what the camera inspection shows.
A resin-saturated liner is inverted or pulled through the old pipe, inflated, and cured in place — creating a new, jointless pipe inside the old one. Because the new liner has no joints, the root intrusion that plagued the old clay line has nowhere to get back in. Lining is the answer when the old pipe is damaged but still holds its shape: cracks, root-broken joints, minor offsets.
When the old line is too far gone to line — badly deformed, partially collapsed, or made of material that can't be lined (Orangeburg's usual fate) — a bursting head is pulled through the old pipe, breaking it outward while dragging a brand-new HDPE pipe into the same path. You get an entirely new line at full diameter without excavating the run.

That last category is worth underlining: trenchless is a repair method, not a miracle. A line with a bad slope stays badly sloped no matter what you line it with — fixing grade means moving pipe, and moving pipe means digging. An honest contractor tells you which side of that table you're on and shows you the footage to prove it.
In typical markets, lining runs roughly $4,000–$15,000 and bursting $6,000–$18,000 for a residential line, priced substantially per foot — length matters more than almost anything else.
